Tips for Maximising Storage in a Caravan

A caravan is a real home away from home, your own personal hotel on wheels where you can escape the daily grind in comfort and style. Because you can kit out your caravan with accessories and equipment to make your breaks as luxurious as possible, you might find yourself quickly running out of space, particularly if you have a smaller model.

Instead of leaving items at home and compromising on what you have in your caravan, why not just get smart with your storage? By thinking carefully about where you put things and how you use the space, you can minimise any cluttered feeling and enjoy your caravan to the max.

Add extra storage

You can always make use of a bit more space to store things neatly, so add some extra options. If you can't afford to invest in proper shelving, or you'd prefer not to add lots of extra wooden fixtures, there's another way to add places to put things.

Getting some inexpensive plastic storage boxes is one way to keep items neat and out of the way, but the boxes need somewhere to go. Instead of having them lying around or tucked under beds, you can fix them to the walls using screws or adhesives, giving you a near-instant alternative to shelves.

Think about shapes

This might sound like a bit of a strange tip, but it's one that can make quite a difference. If you have storage boxes, gadgets and camping equipment, wherever possible, try to get square or rectangular items. When space is at a premium, this is an effective way to make use of it, since things will neatly stack together without any wasted area. Rounded items lead to space remaining unused, and it can add up.

Put things high

There's only a certain amount of vertical space that you're likely to use, or that will have an impact on how crowded a room feels. If you keep things up and out of the way as much as possible, your caravan will feel airy and spacious. Just make sure you can still reach anything you need!

Suck it in

Clothing, bedding and other soft, fabric items can be stored in vacuum bags. You can usually buy these pretty inexpensively, and they'll save you incredible amounts of space. Their contents are compressed using an ordinary vacuum cleaner, and they can simply be unzipped when you need them. Just remember that, if you need to repack them while away in your caravan, you'll need access to a vacuum.
