Tips for Purchasing a Grain Trailer

A grain trailer can be a great asset to your farm if you are looking for a way to expand your farm's functions. First of all, you can use a grain trailer to transport commodities from one area to another. You are not just limited to transporting grain, though that is the most common use of these trailers. Before you decide on a grain trailer to purchase, you need to research a few different areas so that you are sure of what you want to buy.

Axles

How many axles do you want on your grain trailer? Grain trailers can have from one to four axles. Obviously, the more axles present, the stronger a load you can pull. You may want to get the largest number of axles. After all, why not be prepared? However, if you are just adding on an additional function to your farm, it is always best to start out small. The most common type of grain trailer, and therefore the easiest to find, has two axles. Starting with a two axle is a great idea. You may find that you never need to invest in a bigger grain trailer.

Brake System

Next, you need to evaluate what type of braking system you will want on your grain trailer, and the braking system depends on how you plan to use the trailer. There are two main types of braking systems that you will find on a grain trailer: electric and hydraulic. Hydraulic braking systems work by utilizing the push of the trailer toward the vehicle to synchronize the brakes of the trailer with the brakes of the truck. As the trailer pushes up against your truck, the force is applied to the master cylinder, which provides hydraulic pressure to the trailer's brakes. Electric brakes work by connecting the truck to the trailer via wiring. When the brakes are used in the truck, the same force is applied to the trailer.

Condition

Research what type of grain trailers are available in your area. It may be difficult to find used ones, depending on how common their use is where you live. However, if there is a good variety of used grain trailers, consider purchasing a used grain trailer until you get used to using it and decide whether you have the right number of axles and the best braking system or not. Then, once you have had the opportunity to learn, you might consider purchasing a new one that best fits your needs.
